HSU was the prime contractor on this project to rehabilitate the entire memorial grounds. HSU worked collaboratively with the National Park Service for nearly one year to design and develop the process for creating the black aggregate concrete necessary to replicate the black sands at Iwo Jima for the US Marine Corps War Memorial renovation.
All work was carried out according to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The field examination and laboratory analyses of the concrete identified the types of deterioration, probable causes, and options for repairs. Five cycles of samples and mock-ups were produced to develop the final concrete mixtures for the project.
